What is the difference between uniform and graduated layers?

Uniform layers have equal length differences between each section, creating consistent movement throughout. Graduated layers have smaller differences at the top (where layers need to blend more) and larger differences towards the bottom, creating more weight at the base and movement at the top.

How many layers should a layered cut have?

Most layered cuts use 3-5 guide lengths. Fewer layers (2-3) create subtle movement with more weight. More layers (4-6) create more dramatic movement and volume. The number depends on hair length, desired volume and the client face shape. Longer hair can support more layers.

How much should layers drop between sections?

The typical drop between layer sections is 2-5cm for subtle layering and 5-10cm for dramatic layering. A 30cm overall length with a shortest layer of 15cm gives a 15cm total drop — spread across 4 layers that is about 5cm per section. The drop determines how much movement and volume the cut has.

Where should the shortest layer start?

The shortest layer typically starts at the crown or just below it. For face-framing layers, the shortest pieces can start at chin length. The shortest layer should not be so short that it sticks up or creates unwanted volume in the wrong place. Consider the client natural parting and growth patterns.
