Over-Direction Calculator — Length & Weight Variation

Plan over-direction techniques for creating length and weight variations in cuts.

How We Calculate This

This calculator estimates the length variation created when hair is over-directed from its natural fall position before cutting. The further hair is pulled from its natural position, the greater the length difference when it falls back.

The formula

Length difference = Over-direction amount x 0.8

Resulting length = Guide length ± Length difference

  • Forward over-direction creates longer lengths at the back
  • Backward over-direction creates longer face-framing pieces
  • The effect is approximately 0.8cm per 1cm of over-direction
