How do I colour match hair extensions?

Match extensions to the mid-lengths and ends of the natural hair, not the roots. Hold extension swatches against the hair in natural daylight. If the natural hair has multiple tones (ombre, balayage), use 2-3 extension shades blended together. The extensions should disappear into the natural hair when in place.

Should extensions match roots or ends?

Extensions should primarily match the mid-lengths and ends as this is where they blend and overlap. If your client has darker roots and lighter ends (which is natural), match the extensions to the lighter end colour. The dark root area is usually above where extensions are attached.

Can I use multiple extension shades together?

Yes, blending 2-3 shades creates the most natural result, especially for clients with highlighted, balayage or ombre hair. Place darker shades underneath and lighter shades on top and at the front. This mimics natural sun-lightening patterns and creates dimension.

What if I cannot find an exact colour match?

Go slightly lighter rather than darker — lighter extensions are less noticeable than darker ones as they mimic how natural hair lightens at the ends. You can also tint or tone extensions to adjust the shade. Some extension suppliers offer custom colour matching services for an additional fee.
