Hair Extensions — Types, Quantities and Application

Hair extensions have become one of the fastest-growing salon services in the UK. Choosing the right type, quantity and application method depends on the client's natural hair condition, desired result and maintenance commitment. Getting the quantities right is essential for a natural-looking result that blends seamlessly with the client's own hair.

For a full head of tape-in extensions, most clients need 40-60 pieces (20-30 sandwiches). Keratin bond extensions typically require 100-200 individual strands for a full head. Micro ring extensions use a similar quantity. The exact number depends on head size, natural hair density and the desired volume increase. Our calculators help you estimate accurately for each method.

Extension hair is typically sold by weight in grams. A full head application usually requires 100-200g of hair, with finer hair needing less and thicker hair needing more. Standard lengths range from 14" (35cm) to 24" (60cm). Colour matching is critical — many extension brands offer multi-tonal shades that blend more naturally than single-tone colours.
